The latest regulation for Managing and Working with Asbestos is the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 – This regulation states: “Every employer shall ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to those of his employees who are or who are liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees.”
There are 3 Levels of Asbestos Training that is set out in the CAR:
Asbestos Awareness training (Category A)
Asbestos Awareness training is to give workers and supervisors the information they need to avoid work that may disturb asbestos during any normal work which could disturb the fabric of a building, or other item which might contain asbestos. It will not prepare workers, or self-employed contractors, to carry out work with asbestos-containing materials – in this case further training is required. From the HSE Website:
“Online learning (often referred to as e–learning) is increasingly used as a method of providing asbestos awareness training. HSE recognises the use of e-learning as a viable delivery method, among others, for asbestos awareness training, provided it satisfies the requirements of Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the supporting Approved Code of Practice L143 ‘Managing and working with asbestos‘.”
With our ROSPA accredited Asbestos Awareness course, you know that the training your staff will be taking fully complies with all relevant legislation, whilst delivering an engaging, up-to date and hassle free learning experience.
Category B & C
Asbestos awareness will not prepare employees or self-employed contractors to carry out work with Asbestos or Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) (Category B & C – Non-Licensable Work and Licensable Work). Awareness training is only intended to help employees avoid carrying out work that will disturb ACMs. If work is planned that will disturb ACMs, further information, instruction and training appropriate to the work being done will be needed.
